MARKET COMMENTARY

Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, are set for a positive start on January 20, tracking firm cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading higher at around 25,605.50.

In the previous session, Indian equities kicked off the week on a subdued note, with the Nifty slipping below 25,500 intraday amid broad-based profit booking triggered by weak global cues. Investor sentiment remained cautious due to renewed concerns over a potential global trade war and mixed corporate earnings. However, selective buying in FMCG and auto stocks helped the benchmarks rebound from their day’s lows.

On Monday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 83246.18 down by -324.17 points or by -0.39 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25585.5 down by -108.85 points or by -0.42 %.

On the global front, Stock markets in Asia extended their fall, led by a decline in Japan's Nikkei 225 and South Korea's Kospi. Stock markets in Japan also remained on edge after the Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi officially called an early election next month. On Monday, Wall Street were closed for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 577.58 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 111002.74 Crore. On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 126068 with a total turnover of Rs. 21350.11 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 1724671 with a total turnover of Rs. 119890.85 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 192890231 with a total turnover of Rs. 32234273.17 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 10955272 with a total turnover of Rs. 794425.97 Crore.

The FIIs on 19/01/2026 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 20767.32 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 217.87 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 25310.26 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 956.83 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -4542.94 Crore and Rs. -738.96
