Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty are expected to open on a cautious and muted note on January 16, tracking weak global cues. Early indications from GIFT Nifty, which was trading marginally lower near 25,779.50, point to a subdued start for domestic equities.
In the previous session on January 14, Indian markets closed lower in a volatile and range-bound trade. Losses in auto, IT, and realty stocks outweighed gains in metal, PSU banking, and oil & gas counters. Market participants largely remained on the sidelines amid uncertainty ahead of the US Supreme Court’s ruling on the legality of President Donald Trump’s tariff measures.
On Wednesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 83382.71 down by -244.98 points or by -0.29 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25665.6 down by -66.7 points or by -0.26 %.
On the global front, Overnight, US markets ended higher as a rally in technology and banking stocks drove major indices upward. The Dow Jones advanced 0.6 per cent, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq rose 0.26 per cent and 0.25 per cent, respectively. Sentiment was also bolstered by encouraging labor data, with weekly jobless claims for the week ending January 10 coming in at 198,000, notably lower than the 215,000 projected by economists.
In Asia, trading was mixed during the early session. While mainland China’s CSI 300 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained over 0.5 per cent, Japan’s Nikkei and South Korea’s KOSPI edged lower. A key focus for the region is the semiconductor sector following a significant trade pact between the US and Taiwan. Under the agreement, Taiwanese chipmakers have committed to investing at least $250 billion in US manufacturing capacity in exchange for reciprocal tariff benefits.
