Indian benchmark indices are likely to open on a negative note on September 17, tracking GIFT Nifty, which was trading lower at around 23,234.50 in early trade.
The US central bank raised the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to 3.75–4%. In his post-policy conference, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said inflation remained elevated and financial conditions were restrictive. While Warsh refrained from offering forward guidance, his comments were interpreted by traders as hawkish, prompting expectations of another rate hike in October.
The domestic equity market had rebounded in the previous session, with the Nifty snapping a two-day losing streak and closing above the 23,200 mark on September 16.
On Wednesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 74336.45 up by 332.63 points or by 0.45 % and then NSE Nifty was at 23217.6 up by 99 points or by 0.43 %.
On the global front, Asia-Pacific markets were trading on a mixed note as investors assessed the outcomes of the US Fed’s policy meeting. Japan’s Nikkei 2225 and South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.33 per cent and 0.27 per cent, respectively.
Meanwhile, in Hong Kong and mainland China, the Hang Seng and CSI 300 fell 1.42 per cent and 0.17 per cent, respectively.
Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 fell 1.21 per cent and 0.45 per cent, respectively. The Nasdaq Composite settled 0.01 per cent lower.
