Sensex up 282 pts; bank stocks lead, IT drags

Indian benchmark indices traded in positive territory on Tuesday afternoon, extending their upward momentum as strong buying interest in banking and financial stocks offset losses in the information technology sector.



At 14:30 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 73806.51 up by 282.25 points or by 0.38 % and then NSE Nifty was at 23206.05 up by 83.05 points or by 0.36 %.



Sensex touched intraday high of 74035.41 and intraday low of 73426.18 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 23259.45 and intraday low of 23104.45



The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. (Rs. 4532.65,+3.93%), State Bank of India (Rs. 1005.25,+2.38%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1275.70,+2.06%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1290.00,+1.72%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 2704.75,+1.71%), among others.



The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 4111.00,-1.92%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 356.40,-1.75%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1480.65,-1.47%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 286.20,-1.46%), Eternal Ltd. (Rs. 245.30,-1.15%), among others.



Bankex index was at 62149.27 up by 1210.53 points or by 1.99%. Bank of Baroda (Rs. 272.85,+5.29%), Canara Bank (Rs. 136.70,+3.68%), Federal Bank Ltd. (Rs. 315.60,+3.54%), Punjab National Bank (Rs. 109.50,+3.50%), IDFC First Bank Ltd. (Rs. 73.72,+3.25%),.



TECk index was at 14691.66 down by -109.5 points or by -0.74%. Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (Rs. 108.21,-2.62%), Tejas Networks Ltd. (Rs. 528.60,-2.59%), Indus Towers Ltd. (Rs. 419.45,-1.61%), Vodafone Idea Ltd. (Rs. 14.16,-1.53%), Coforge Ltd. (Rs. 1400.35,-1.48%),.



The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 4527 , shares advanced were 2730 while 1571 shares declined and 226 were unchanged.
