Post-Session: Sensex, Nifty end higher despite volatility amid defence strikes

Benchmark Indian equity indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty closed higher on Wednesday, overcoming intra-day volatility sparked by geopolitical tensions.



Markets reacted to the Ministry of Defence’s announcement that Indian armed forces had carried out precision strikes targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir early in the day. These strikes were in retaliation for the April 22, 2025, terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians in Kashmir.



The 30-share benchmark index ended at 80746.78 up by 105.71 points or by 0.13 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24414.4 up by 34.8 points or by 0.14 %.



Sensex touched intraday high of 80844.63 and intraday low of 79937.48 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 24449.6 and intraday low of 24220



The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 680.50,+5.05%), Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 8985.50,+2.14%), Eternal Ltd. (Rs. 236.90,+1.85%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 3119.85,+1.64%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 1339.00,+1.41%), among others.



The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 2332.65,-3.53%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1783.35,-1.95%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 430.65,-1.15%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1562.65,-1.04%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1406.00,-1.02%), among others.



Auto index was at 51787.51 up by 885.82 points or by 1.74%. Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd. (Rs. 142.50,+5.28%), Bharat Forge Ltd. (Rs. 1140.45,+5.10%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 680.50,+5.05%), Sundram Fasteners Ltd. (Rs. 959.90,+4.64%), MRF Ltd. (Rs. 140670.75,+4.23%),.

FMCG index was at 20519.95 down by -84.86 points or by -0.41%. Bannari Amman Sugars Ltd. (Rs. 3825.00,-5.87%), Prataap Snacks Ltd. (Rs. 1143.15,-4.64%), Radico Khaitan Ltd. (Rs. 2448.05,-3.39%), Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1775.20,-3.28%), Godfrey Phillips India Ltd. (Rs. 8422.65,-2.89%),.



The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 4247 , shares advanced were 2306 while 1759 shares declined and 182 were unchanged.
