Mid-Session: Sensex up 290 pts, Nifty above 22,150; IT, realty rally

Indian benchmark indices were trading around half a per cent on Tuesday. Among sectors, Information Technology, realty, pharma, capital goods up 0.5 percent each, while oil & gas index down nearly 1 percent.



Overseas, European stocks may open on a cautious note Tuesday as investors await key inflation readings for directional cues. In Asia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Indonesia and Taiwan are lower by between 0.2 and 1.0 percent each, while China and Malaysia are up 0.3 percent each.



On the corporate front, Power Grid Corp, Eicher Motors, Titan Company and Grasim Industries all were up around 1 percent. Lemon Tree Hotels added 1.3 percent as it signed a license agreement for two new hotel properties in Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.



Meanwhile, Oil prices dropped earlier in the day, weighed down by demand worries, especially in the face of uncertainty over the timing and pace of interest rate cuts in the U.S. and Europe.



At 12:54 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 73080.44 up by 290.31 points or by 0.4 % and then NSE Nifty was at 22161.1 up by 39.05 points or by 0.18 %.



The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 73089.57 and intraday low of 72660.13 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 22170 and intraday low of 22085.65.



The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 4095.05,+2.37%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 953.00,+1.74%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 292.05,+1.49%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1670.90,+1.29%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 818.35,+1.22%), among others.



The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were State Bank of India (Rs. 750.10,-1.17%), Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 6608.00,-0.50%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1293.00,-0.37%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 2860.00,-0.29%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 336.80,-0.22%), among others.



Among the sectors, Realty index was at 7346.85 up by 83.64 points or by 1.15%. Swan Energy Ltd. (Rs. 755.00,+3.52%), Sobha Ltd. (Rs. 1631.35,+3.44%), Macrotech Developers Ltd. (Rs. 1148.35,+2.93%), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 917.40,+1.58%), Brigade Enterprises Ltd. (Rs. 1015.20,+1.57%),.



On the flip side, PSU index was at 18611.4 down by -77.69 points or by -0.42%. NMDC Ltd. (Rs. 225.75,-3.92%), Hindustan Copper Ltd. (Rs. 253.85,-3.20%), REC Ltd. (Rs. 446.40,-2.82%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 528.35,-2.48%), MMTC Ltd. (Rs. 78.90,-2.18%),.



The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 4069 , shares advanced were 1875 while 2028 shares declined and 166 were unchanged.
