India, Nepal review trade, transit and connectivity issues at New Delhi meeting

India and Nepal reviewed a range of trade, transit and connectivity issues during the Inter-Governmental Sub-Committee (IGSC) meeting held in New Delhi on September 16–17, 2026.

Discussions covered market access, Customs and trade facilitation, standards, food safety, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, AYUSH products, phytosanitary measures, border infrastructure and rail and road connectivity.

Both sides also discussed measures to strengthen Customs cooperation, including pre-arrival information exchange, electronic verification of Certificates of Origin, and greater automation and digitalisation, while addressing unauthorised trade and misuse of preferential trade arrangements.

Transit and connectivity were a key focus, with officials reviewing freight movement, Integrated Check Posts, land-port infrastructure and operational bottlenecks affecting bilateral and transit trade.

The two countries agreed to maintain close engagement through established institutional mechanisms and undertake time-bound follow-up on issues requiring further technical examination. India and Nepal have an established Treaty of Trade and Treaty of Transit framework governing bilateral and transit trade.
