India's First direct commercial container freight train reaches Nepal

Indian Railways has successfully operated the first direct commercial container freight train from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar Customs Yard, Nepal, marking a major milestone in cross-border rail connectivity between the two countries.

The train, comprising 40 wagons carrying a consignment of canola, completed its journey under the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol, enabling direct rail transportation of containerised cargo from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar without transshipment at the border.

The new arrangement is expected to reduce transit time, lower logistics costs, minimise cargo handling, and improve the efficiency and reliability of cross-border trade. It follows the inauguration of the Jogbani-Biratnagar broad-gauge rail link in June 2023 and the signing of the revised Letter of Exchange (LoE) in November 2025, which paved the way for direct commercial rail operations.

The initiative is expected to boost bilateral trade by providing exporters, importers, and logistics operators with a faster, more cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable mode of freight transportation. It also reinforces Indian Railways' commitment to expanding international rail connectivity, strengthening freight logistics, and supporting regional economic integration.
