NFDC-NFAI restores Malayalam Classic 'Kireedam' in 4K, Set for Theatrical Re-Release

The National Film Development Corporation–National Film Archive of India (NFDC–NFAI) has restored the Malayalam classic 'Kireedam' in 4K resolution with Dolby Atmos sound, with the iconic film set to return to theatres across India and overseas on July 10, 2026.

Originally released in 1989, the film was restored under the National Film Heritage Mission after its original camera negative had deteriorated. NFDC–NFAI used a 35mm release print preserved in its archives for over three decades as the basis for the restoration, highlighting the importance of long-term archival preservation.

Directed by Siby Malayil and written by A.K. Lohithadas, Kireedam stars Mohanlal and Thilakan in lead roles and is widely regarded as one of Malayalam cinema's finest films. The restoration involved high-resolution scanning, digital image restoration, colour grading, and Dolby Atmos sound remastering.

The restored version had its world premiere at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and received an enthusiastic response from audiences. NFDC said the restoration reflects its continued commitment to preserving and promoting India's cinematic heritage while making timeless classics accessible to new generations of viewers.
