Tata Power, LSE and IGC launch Energy Insights & Innovation Lab to support India’s clean energy transition

Tata Power on Friday announced the launch of the Energy Insights & Innovation Lab (EIIL) at its Mumbai headquarters, in collaboration with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the International Growth Centre (IGC). The initiative aims to support India’s clean energy transition by leveraging advanced research, data and experimentation to improve the quality, reliability and affordability of electricity services.

The lab will focus on addressing key challenges in India’s power sector, including managing peak electricity demand and enabling deeper integration of renewable energy in line with the country’s net-zero goals.

The EIIL was inaugurated by Tata Power CEO and Managing Director Praveer Sinha, along with LSE Professor and IGC Director Robin Burgess and IGC Executive Director Jonathan Leape, in the presence of UK Trade Commissioner for South Asia and British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India Harjinder Kang and other senior academics and industry leaders.

The launch also marked the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Tata Power, LSE and IGC to co-develop scalable, evidence-based solutions for the power sector using global best practices.

The lab will combine consumer behavioural science, data analytics and energy systems modelling to test practical, real-world solutions. It will conduct applied pilots using smart meter and IoT data to improve demand-side management, grid resilience and consumer flexibility, while exploring ways to smooth peak electricity demand in urban households.

Over time, the partners plan to expand EIIL into a full-scale innovation hub with a broader mandate, including support for tariff design, regulatory approvals, distributed renewable energy adoption and energy equity.

Tata Power said the collaboration reflects a growing UK–India research partnership that integrates global academic expertise with on-ground operational capabilities to deliver scalable and sustainable clean energy solutions.
