Benchmark equity indices BSE Sensex and Nifty50 were likely to start on a slow note on Monday, following Friday's sell-off in the US markets, when investors there made a dash for safe heaven assets there.
The GIFT Nifty is trading lower, indicating a negative start for the day. Nifty futures were trading at 24,830.5 at 07:00 am IST.
On Friday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 81183.93 down by -1017.23 points or by -1.24 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24852.15 down by -292.95 points or by -1.17 %.
On the global front, Asian share markets slid on Monday after worries about a possible US economic downturn slugged Wall Street, while dragging bond yields and commodity prices lower as investors avoided risk assets for safer harbours. US stocks fell on Friday, weighed down by a jobs report that showed a continued labor market slowdown but left traders uncertain about how far the Federal Reserve will go in cutting interest rates.
All three main indexes were lower, with the 11 sectors of the benchmark S&P 500 losing ground led by declines in communication services, consumer discretionary and technology equities.
The S&P 500 and the Dow had their biggest weekly drop since March 2023, with the Nasdaq registering its biggest weekly drop since January 2022.
US Labor Department data showed US employers added 142,000 jobs in August, shy of analyst expectations, while jobs growth for July was revised down to 89,000, also below estimates.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 410.34 points, or 1.01%, to 40,345.41, the S&P 500 lost 94.99 points, or 1.73%, to 5,408.42 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 436.83 points, or 2.55%, to 16,690.83.
