Sensex falls 232 pts, Nifty tests 22,200 in broad-based selling

Sensex, Nifty opened lower as investors turn cautious post the third phase of Lok Sabha polls.



On the BSE, Maruti Suzuki, Reliance Industries were the top gainers while L&T and Asian Paints were among the major laggards.



At 9:45 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 73279.17 down by -232.68 points or by -0.32 % and then NSE Nifty was at 22262.5 down by -40 points or by -0.18 %.



Sensex touched intraday high of 73418.14 and intraday low of 73148.76 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 22282.65 and intraday low of 22185.6



The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 166.35,+1.31%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 352.95,+1.12%), State Bank of India (Rs. 809.50,+0.94%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 12482.40,+0.93%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 864.20,+0.85%), among others.



The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 2344.20,-1.49%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 2876.00,-1.22%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 3391.20,-1.21%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1490.15,-1.08%), UltraTech Cement Ltd. (Rs. 9600.00,-0.91%), among others.



PSU index was at 19702.52 up by 345.46 points or by 1.78%. NBCC (India) Ltd. (Rs. 136.85,+6.50%), REC Ltd. (Rs. 535.45,+5.65%), Power Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 442.05,+4.80%), Mangalore Refinery And Petrochemicals Ltd. (Rs. 222.95,+3.77%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 199.20,+3.35%),.



IT index was at 34136.61 down by -173.77 points or by -0.51%. Sonata Software Ltd. (Rs. 555.05,-12.92%), Protean eGov Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1165.05,-4.15%), Cressanda Railway Solutions Ltd. (Rs. 14.14,-2.88%), Zensar Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 602.05,-1.25%), eMudhra Ltd. (Rs. 726.05,-1.04%),.



The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3122 , shares advanced were 1907 while 1108 shares declined and 107 were unchanged.
