Pre-Session: GIFT Nifty indicates a weak start; US, Asian markets fall

The benchmark Sensex and Nifty indices are likely to open on a negative note on April 16 as trends in the GIFT Nifty indicate a lower start for the broader index with a loss of 168.50 points.



The rout in global equities, including India, may extend on Tuesday amid reports that Israel is preparing for an 'imminent' attack on Iran.



The latter, on its part, has said that it doesn't want to escalate the conflict but would defend its territory.

On Monday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 73399.78 down by -845.12 points or by -1.14 % and then NSE Nifty was at 22272.5 down by -246.9 points or by -1.1 %.



On the global front, across Asia, Japan's Nikkei, and South Korea's Kospi tumbled 2 per cent each, while Australia's ASX 200, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 1.4 per cent each.

Overnight, US stocks retreated on Monday as rising yields and worries over the conflict in the Middle East overshadowed strong Goldman Sachs earnings and hot retail sales data.



The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.65 per cent, the S&P 500 slipped 1.2 per cent, and the Nasdaq Composite tumbled 1.79 per cent.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 44.58 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 104736.68 Crore.



On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 401323 with a total turnover of Rs. 37479.62 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 1498364 with a total turnover of Rs. 133316.37 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 306812519 with a total turnover of Rs. 25767037.59 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 7046576 with a total turnover of Rs. 644854.68 Crore.



The FIIs on 15/04/2024 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 15334.67 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 2352.86 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 23274.44 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 4119.23 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -7939.77 Crore and Rs. -1766.37
